A chronograph model with water resistance to 100 meters, the EQS-500 features a sporty metal case shaped with prominent edges framing a watch face that evokes the instrument panel and the gears of a sleek automotive machine.

Expressing precision and speed, the multi-hand watch face is finished with a dual-layer design to emphasize a multi-dimensional feeling. Its hands — driven by five independent motors — move in variegated patterns that suggest dynamic movement. The chronograph dials include a small hand for minutes and seconds at the 8-o’clock position, a second hand in the center position that also displays values of 1/10 of a second, and a small hand at the 3-o’clock position that displays values of 1/100 of a second immediately when the user stops the chronograph.

The EQS-500 is equipped with a world time function that displays the current time in 29 cities, viewable by matching the center second hand with city codes in the dial ring, as well as Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

The new lineup includes the EQS-500DB, featuring a metal band and ion-plated bezel in a mirror-finished stainless steel case; and the EQS-500C, featuring a resin band and black, ion-plated stainless steel case and bezel.

The Seahope ANTS watch tells time using a bunch of the little 6-legged buggers. At first glance, you’ll have no idea what time it is. Confusing watches are not new to us. Here comes the Heartbeat LED watch which also uses unusual way to tell time. The LED display of this watch is made to look like a little heartbeat monitor, but it doesn’t have the ability to measure your heartbeat.

When you take a glance at the watch, it is definitely hard to tell what time it is. By taking a closer look, you’ll also have problem to interpret the time. The Heartbeat LED watch has a button that allows you to display the time for a few seconds.

You can also get the LED display to light up at all times as it has built-in resuscitation capability. But, doing so, the power of the watch can only last for 24 hours. But you can recharge the watch via the computer’s USB port. A recharge for 1-2 hours will let the watch to have its display staying on for 24 hours only. If you just get the LED display to light up on demand, then it shall be able to last for several months on a single charge.

The heartbeat watch comes in two styles available, which are the black and brushed stainless versions, with a choice of either a green or red LED display. The little inconvenience is you need to charge the watch when its internal battery runs out.

Porsche Design Creates the P 6920 Rattrapante Chronograph

The P´6920 Rattrapante Chronograph is a new sporty timepiece from Porsche Design. The highly masculine watch, equipped with a mechanical movement, will be unveiled at Baselworld 2009.

The P´6920 Rattrapante can measure intermediate times due to the split-second mechanism. First, the watch wearer has to start the chronograph by pressing the push-piece found at 2 o’clock and the two superimposed central seconds hands start to move.

When the watch wearer presses the push-piece on the left, the lower seconds hand stops, indicating the first intermediate time. When the push-piece on the left is pressed again, the first hand catches up with the second hand and continues moving in synchrony. The precision of the Rattrapante Chronograph is crowned with a COSC-certificate.

The dial of the Porsche Design watch is characterized by remarkable clarity and typography to guarantee perfect legibility. The black dial is embellished with honeycomb pattern. The dial is completed with rhodanised bar indices and Arabic numerals as well as white or gold skeleton triangular-tipped hour and minute hands coated with grey luminous material.

The 30-minute-counter is positioned at 12 o’clock, the 12-hour-counter at 6 o’clock, the small seconds at 9 o’clock and the date counter at 3 o’clock.

The black counters and the date indicator are accentuated by red and white. The black central seconds hand, responsible for the stop function, features the red tip, while the black fly-back hand, for the intermediate time, has a green tip.

The face of the watch is protected by a slightly cambered anti-reflective, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

The bold case of the P´6920 Rattrapante Chronograph measures 45mm in diameter. It is crafted from titanium, highly appreciated by watchmakers for its lightness and corrosion-resistance. The titanium surface is PVD-coated for extra protection from external influences.

The new Porsche Design watch has been created in two versions – the first version completely in PVD-coated titanium and the second version in titanium with elements in classically elegant rose gold that nicely contrasts with the sporty design of the watch. Rose gold has been used for the bezel, crown and case back of the second version.

The screwed-down crown demonstrates clous de Paris decoration. The entire case construction is affixed with four screws. The three push-buttons, in black PVD-coated titanium, has been clearly inspired by the design of the pedals of a Porsche Carrera GT. The push-pieces have been designed to provide optimum grip.

The case back has a sapphire crystal window that reveals the Porsche Design rotor system and self-winding Valjoux 7750 movement.

The timepiece is 50-meter water-resistant.

Clock by Christiaan Postma consists of more than 150 synchronised clock mechanisms, which rotate metal bars that briefly align to spell the appropriate time.

“The word “three” completely appears when it’s exactly 3 o’clock and will then transform again as time passes. The word “four” begins to appear and at exactly 4 o’clock the word “four” is clearly visible. The word “three” is by then totally vanished and no longer readable.”

Marc Owens’ Receipt Clock

Post-graduate student Marc Owens has designed a faceless clock that prints the time and date on a paper receipt.

The Receipt Clock takes the form of a wall-mounted machine with a single button which, when pressed, prints on paper from a roll and delivers the receipt through a slot.

The user then tears off the receipt, which also has a series of printed lines that can be used to write messages relevant to the particular moment.

“Whether it be on a bus ticket, auto bank statement or shop receipt, the presence of the printed time and date are all consistently featured,” Owens says. “I am interested in how this documentation of a specific time and date can be applied to time keeping generally. This product allows for a more private interaction with time.”

The clock shown here is a prototype; Owens says the first complete version will be ready in the next few weeks.

Owens is currently studying the Design Products course at the Royal College of Art in London.

His OCD Light Switch (below), which records the number of times it has been switched on and off as an aid to people with obsessive compulsive disorder, was one of the highlights of the New Designers showcase of graduate design work.

“It’s as if everyone these days has come from or is going to somewhere else… ” explains Hecht. “Two-Timer is a useful expression of this modern condition, merging two different time zones into one clock.”

Many cities, with London no exception, continue to experience the mass movement of people. It’s as if everyone these days has come from somewhere else. The Two Timer clock acknowledges this modern condition with two clocks sharing the same dial.

How curious an idea - it’s as if a finger has stretched a round clock to form a little corner – an offspring, if you like. Two quartz movements, with a carefully devised dial, are housed in a steel frame.

Ora Unica by designer Denis Guidone is a watch where the hands are formed by the ends of a squiggly line.

The watch face consists of two circular dials, one inside the other, both of which have parts of the doodle printed on the surface.

The Ora Unica watch won the Adam O'Eva Creations international design prize this year. The jury consisted of Alessandro Mendini, Arnaldo Pomodoo, James Wines, Ed Carpenter, Carmelo Strano, Philippe Samy.

Single Hour , 2007

Imprecision and defect manifest a fullness of sense, an inherent pluralism of inflections.

These aspects let us calibrate communication with an idea of imperfection that isn’t “negative”, but which it simply presents itself as a more complicated concept of perfection, often an insignificant and anesthetic value within its “compliance” characteristics.

The imperfection becomes the “ruling principle” of new rational configurations that certify contrast, that wish for irregularity and the break from symmetry, which become distinctive traits of our times.

Ora Unica wishes to be a provocative clock; its aesthetic principle is inaccuracy. Lack of discipline, a childish and irrational gesture to define time, which is precision and rationality. The hour and minute hands are represented by a single line drawn on two circular faces, which turn one inside the other. Both faces together resemble a graphical gesture, a doodle that changes as time passes.

In case you’re wondering, the pointy thing is the minute hand, and the roundy thing is the hour hand. The Rim Clock turns all that you know about clocks inside out. Instead of staying put and pointing to numbers like the hands of other, more well-behaved clocks, the hands on the Rim Clock are actually protrusions that go around the outside and point to the wall.

One caveat about the utility of this this clock: although it looks great, unless you’ve painted, penciled, stenciled and/or taped numbers to your wall, you probably won’t always be exactly on time. Great looks? Check. Innovative design? Check. Reliable, precise time-telling? Not so much.
